So, if you're already an experienced runner, or you're just starting out… if you're an experienced yogi already, or have never stood on a mat… this week will teach you specifically how yoga can support and improve your running. And there are many ways that the yoga will support your running: from the knowledge of the benefits of specific asanas on the muscles and joints you use most when running; to the mind-body approach of yoga that makes running a holistic, mindful experience rather than just a means to an end (and a finishing line)
During the week, we will do yoga and we will run. Christine will make sure that you are in groups for the running that you feel fully comfortable with. You will be able to go at the pace that suits you. In all respects, you listen to yourself, and do what you need to do during this week (and that's a great principle to apply to both your running and your yoga anyway)
We will run in different places in the spectacular scenery that surrounds The Hill That Breathes… and, yes, it's possible to avoid steep hills if you want to.
What's for sure is that, whatever your level (of running and yoga), you will have a wonderful, fun week, in which you learn more about both running and yoga, and take away skills that will improve both in your everyday life (and, as we all know, actually improve your everyday life too!).
All our yoga holidays are designed for all levels. As on other weeks, there is one session in the morning and one late-afternoon.
Maybe it was because I (John) had recently starting to run myself, but I noticed over the summer that lots of people coming on the yoga weeks were out running in the morning. Some were, like me, just starting out, but really getting the running bug, others were experienced competitive runners. They were clearly enjoying the yoga, even though there was no explicit link between the two activities. As for me, I was starting to use some rudimentary asanas for my warm-ups. But I had little idea as to which specific asanas were best for my running.
And as luck would have it, I received an e-mail from a Canadian pioneer in Yoga for Runners™, Christine Felstead (she even has the TM!). We met. She's brilliant. And here she is now, teaching Yoga & Running at The Hill That Breathes.
Her own discovery of yoga came after years of serious running, accompanied by the usual injuries and setbacks. Once she started combining yoga with her running, she was surprised at the dramatic changes: she felt stronger and lighter on her feet, her posture improved, her breathing deepened and the injuries dropped away.
She qualified as a yoga instructor and began to put together programmes specifically designed for runners (the subject she was most passionate about herself). And the programmes were a huge hit. She's changed the experience of running for thousands of people. And she now trains other yoga instructors how to teach Yoga for Runners too.
